01/11/92 - Why i had to grass
News and Echo

DOORMAN Bernard O'Mahoney went against every rule in his book when he shopped pervert Richard Blenkey. Not because he could accept what Blenkey had done... but because he was helping the police.

He told us: "I've never been a police grass and never will be. And I've been brought up to hate anyone who is. He added: "If Blenkey had been a bank robber, I would never have gone to the police in a million years.

"But this was a crime against a child... and that is a crime against everyone." Once Bernard received Blenkey's confession, he had no doubts. He said: "I knew that I couldn't let him walk the streets.

"But it was hard going to the police because of the way I feel about them. Pleased "I felt sick that anyone could put a child through what Paul went through. But I was pleased I got Blenkey to confess.

"Nothing will bring Paul back so the next people I had to look at were his family. They needed justice and the truth." Bernard asked his wife if he was doing the right thing.

He said: "She pointed out that it could have been our kids. So I got straight on the phone. "The really sad thing is that he was only given 20 years."
