05/12/01 - Whiting: The key prosecution
points
Daily Mail
THE Crown claims that Whiting:
FAILED to ask when Sarah Payne disappeared. The prosecution
claimed he never asked what time she vanished because
he already knew. He seemed to have a 'memory blank'
after 8pm that night.
FAILED to ask exactly where she disappeared from, even
though he knew the area well and, according to the Crown,
knew that the cornfield where she was playing had a
rope swing and was a popular play area for children.
FAILED to tell police he had used a pressure hose to
wash out the inside of his van the day after Sarah vanished,
or that he had dumped the plywood that lined the back
of the vehicle.
FAILED to give a simple, 15-second explanation about
a timed and dated fuel receipt that could have given
him the perfect alibi for what he was doing on the evening
Sarah was snatched. The prosecution said it would have
placed him 'too close for comfort' to the spot where
he buried her body.
CLAIMED that semen on the cuff of his lumberjack shirt,
found in the back of the van, had got there when he
brushed against the material when going to the lavatory.
STONEWALLED under police questioning because when he
was arrested - just 24 hours after Sarah disappeared
- he had not yet worked out his story. He knew police
were looking for a missing schoolgirl but told them
'practically nothing'. |
