MR LATHAM
My Lord the last witness in this group is WAYNE SHORT.
I'm conscious my Lord has something else to deal with.
MR JUSTICE MOSES
Let's have WAYNE SHORT MR LATHAM
Mr Short, full name, please? WAYNE SHORT
Wayne Richard Short. MR LATHAM
You were one of those who was in the bar of the Ross Peers
Sports Centre on the evening of Sunday 4th August, weren't
you? WAYNE SHORT
Yes, I was, yes. MR LATHAM
And MARY WATKINS, as she now is, was working behind the
bar and I think Jonathan was there as well?
WAYNE SHORT
Yes, they were there. MR LATHAM
They were friends of yours? WAYNE SHORT
Yes. MR LATHAM
At the end of the evening, just as the bar was being closed
up and the sports centre security, did someone else turn
up at the reception? WAYNE SHORT
Yes, MARK ABBOTT turned up. MR LATHAM
Was he someone that you knew? WAYNE
SHORT
Yes, fairly well. MR LATHAM
Did he have a particular concern when he arrived?
WAYNE SHORT
Yes, he turned up and said that had we seen two girls.
MR LATHAM
Have you seen two girls? Did he give you any further information
at that point about who he was talking about?
WAYNE SHORT
Not straight away, we then asked who they were, we asked
what they were wearing but he didn't know at the time
what they were wearing. MR LATHAM
What did he tell you? WAYNE SHORT
The names, Holly and Jessica. MR LATHAM
Did you in fact know either Holly or Jessica before that
evening? WAYNE SHORT
No, I didn't, no. MR LATHAM
You mentioned what they were wearing, did he give you
some information? WAYNE SHORT
No, he didn't know at that time, I don't think.
MR LATHAM
What did you do - by you, I mean you and (inaudible) as
you locked the building up and went outside?
WAYNE SHORT
Yes, we came outside, Mark and John went (inaudible) the
tennis courts down the little---- MR
LATHAM
You came out of the sports centre there is---?
WAYNE SHORT
A driveway, yes. MR LATHAM
Left to right across the front? WAYNE
SHORT
They turned left. MR LATHAM
On the left you lead up to the tennis courts?
WAYNE SHORT
Yes. MR LATHAM
Right down to the car park? WAYNE SHORT
Yes. MR LATHAM
Who went up to the tennis courts? WAYNE
SHORT
That was Johnny and Mark. MR LATHAM
And what about you and Mary? WAYNE SHORT
Me and Mary just waited outside the sports centre.
MR LATHAM
How long were they gone for? WAYNE SHORT
Only a few minutes, five minutes. MR
LATHAM
Did they then come back? WAYNE SHORT
Yes. MR LATHAM
So now you are group of four again? WAYNE
SHORT
Yes. MR LATHAM
What did you as a group decide to do? WAYNE
SHORT
We were going to go in cars to look for them.
MR LATHAM
That was a Sunday night ? WAYNE SHORT
Yes. MR LATHAM
Did you have to be at work the next day? WAYNE
SHORT
Yes. MR LATHAM
How long that night were you involved in any searching?
WAYNE SHORT
Until midnight. MR LATHAM
Now, the other two having joined you, did you see anyone
else before you set off on this search? WAYNE
SHORT
Yes, walking the dog. MR LATHAM
Where did you see this person walking the dog?
WAYNE SHORT
At the entrance to the sports centre. He was walking down,
going towards the----? MR LATHAM
The same direction the other two had gone searching?
WAYNE SHORT
Yes. MR LATHAM
a few minutes earlier. anything said that you could hear
or that you said to the man with the dog? WAYNE
SHORT
Mark asked had he seen two girls, he said no, he then
asked, I heard him ask who they were and Mark told him.
I didn't hear anything else, the only thing I heard, Mark
told him if he saw anything, the police knew they were
missing, to contact the police. MR LATHAM
did you on that night know who that man was?
WAYNE SHORT
no. MR LATHAM
who you, you as a group, were speaking to? WAYNE
SHORT
no, I didn't. MR LATHAM
can I ask you this were you able to give, or can you give,
any description of that man or, more particularly what
he was wearing on that night? WAYNE
SHORT
yes, he was (inaudible) late 20's, black jeans, black
shoes and a pastel-coloured shirt. MR
LATHAM
the shirt I would like to ask you about, could you help
us with as much detail as possible about the shirt?
WAYNE SHORT
I can't remember the exact colour because the lighting
is not great there, it is quite (inaudible). All I remember
he had a full colour Ralph Lauren horse----
MR LATHAM
where was this? WAYNE SHORT
on there. MR LATHAM
the left-hand chest of the shirt. Did you know the make
of shirt from the logo on the shirt? WAYNE
SHORT
Yes, I did, yes. MR JUSTICE MOSES
he said it was Ralph Lauren. MR LATHAM
a Ralph Lauren shirt. MR LATHAM
thank you, would you wait there, please. Cross-examined
by MR COWARD MR COWARD
are you sure about this shirt, the Ralph Lauren shirt?
WAYNE SHORT
absolutely positive. MR COWARD
forget the Lauren badge for a moment, what colour did
you say the shirt was? WAYNE SHORT
I couldn't say what the colour was, I can't remember,
I know it was a light coloured shirt but I can't say exactly
what the colour was. MR COWARD
black jeans, black shoes you say? WAYNE
SHORT
yes. MR COWARD
any pockets on the shirt? WAYNE SHORT
no, I don't think so, no. MR COWARD
when MARK ABBOTT came to the hall, the centre, he obviously
told you that two girls had gone missing? WAYNE
SHORT
yes. MR COWARD
and when you spoke to him about that what you say is he
didn't know what they were wearing? WAYNE
SHORT
he didn't say to me what they were wearing.
MR COWARD
you go out to search and Mark asked this man with the
dog if he had seen two girls? WAYNE
SHORT
yes. MR COWARD
and the man's reply was, no, he hadn't? WAYNE
SHORT
that's correct, yes. MR COWARD
according to you the man then asked who the girls were?
WAYNE SHORT
yes. MR COWARD
that must have been a surprise when you got the answer?
WAYNE SHORT
how do you mean. MR COWARD
from MARK ABBOTT ? WAYNE SHORT
How he got the answer. MR COWARD
How you got the answer, Holly Wells, Jessica Chapman was
it, the full names? WAYNE SHORT
Yes, yes. MR COWARD
You had already been given that? WAYNE
SHORT
Mark had said Holly and Jessica yes, when he was in the
sports centre before l knew the surnames on the two girls?
WAYNE SHORT
I didn't really know the surnames, I don't know the girls
it wouldn't make any difference to me. MR
COWARD
Which answer was given by MARK ABBOTT was it just Christian
names? WAYNE SHORT
No, he gave the full names to the person walking the dog.
MR COWARD
He gave the full names? WAYNE SHORT
Yes. MR COWARD
I think it was on 18th August you were seen by the police?
WAYNE SHORT
Yes. MR COWARD
Had you spoken to Jonathan Watkins at all before the police
saw you on the 18th August? WAYNE SHORT
Yes, I was going out with them every night, working most
nights. MR COWARD
Had Jonathan Watkins told you that on the 16th August
he had been seen by the police? WAYNE
SHORT
I can't remember. MR COWARD
And did you know on the 18th August that Mr Ian Huntley
had been arrested by the police? WAYNE
SHORT
Yes, I did. MR COWARD
In connection with this matter? WAYNE
SHORT
Yes, I did. MR COWARD
You see, I must suggest to you, that all Mr Huntley ever
said when your group spoke to him outside the sport centre,
he was asked if he had seen two girls and he said no,
he was just walking his dog, and that was it?
WAYNE SHORT
No he stopped and spoke to Mark because Mark knew him
anyway. MR COWARD
Thank you. MR LATHAM
I have no re-examination. MR JUSTICE
MOSES
Thank you very much indeed. (the witness
withdrew). MR LATHAM
My Lord I am happy to carry on. How many witnesses are
hanging around? MR JUSTICE MOSES
Lots. MR LATHAM
We have released, I think, quite a few because they had
a way to travel. MR JUSTICE MOSES
But you still have some hanging around. MR
LATHAM
They will have to come back tomorrow. MR
JUSTICE MOSES
I think that's probably enough for today. Some of you
will say yes. I'm sorry we have kept witnesses waiting,
it is my fault I rather take the view rather than you
having too short a day and your time being wasted, it
is better your time is not wasted even if jurors have
to come back because I think your time, and making sure
you have a productive day, is more important. Anyway I
think you have probably had enough. At least I have.
Hearing adjourned - will resume tomorrow
