05/09/01 - Child killer Hughes
'disappointed' over failed bid
Daily Post Liverpool
CONVICTED child killer Howard Hughes was said to be
"disappointed" yesterday after his bid for
freedom failed.
The Criminal Cases Review Commission has decided not
to refer his convictions for raping and murdering seven-year-old
Sophie Hook to the Court of Appeal.
He was jailed at Chester Crown Court in 1996 for and
is serving his three life sentences in high security
Full Sutton Prison near York.
His solicitor, Campbell Malone, said last night: "I
have not spoken to him. I have had a note. He is obviously
very disappointed and maintains his position that he
is innocent."
Mr Malone plans to visit his client at Full Sutton
next week to discuss his future. The CCRC turned down
Hughes' attempt to seek an appeal after 12 months of
scrutinising his application.
Yesterday, Mr Malone would not disclose the grounds for
the application. But a fresh application can be made if
new evidence materialises. |
