21/01/05 - Fury over Ripper's
day trip
Daily Record
YORKSHIRE Ripper Peter Sutcliffe's day release was slated
last night by the husband of one of his victims. Harry
Smelt said the feelings of he and wife Olive - who survived
the 1975 attack - had been ignored.
Now 75, Olive tries to put the past behind her.
But Harry said: 'Nobody worries about victims these
days.'
Sutcliffe, now 58, killed 13 women and left seven for
dead in the late 70s and early 80s after battering them
with a hammer then stabbing them in the chest.
He was allowed out of Broadmoor top-security hospital
on Monday to visit the spot where his dad John's ashes
were buried in Arnside, Cumbria.
Former Home Secretary David Blunkett approved the visit.
Yesterday, the Home Office insisted the decision was
'the right and proper thing to do'.
A spokesman said: 'A risk assessment was made and the
individual was closely supervised.'
But Tory MP Julie Kirkbride, who was at school with
one victim, said: 'I don't think it's possible the Home
Secretary understands the fear women lived in for years.'
Sutcliffe was given a life sentence for murder in 1981.
