04/02/01 - If only we hadn't
fallen for a hoax
Sunday Mirror
DETECTIVE Superintendent Dick Holland, who at one time
led the hunt for the Ripper, says now that investigating
a "bloody tape" claiming to be from the killer
was "one of the biggest mistakes in British police
history".
Now 68, he said: "It was a hoaxand we fell for it.
If we had got him early, some victims may have been saved.
"He turned up on our filing system as using red
light areas. But another 22,562 men fitted that criterion
as well.
"It's like looking for one man in a decent crowd
at a Leeds United game. Those were the odds we faced."
