04/02/05 - Keep monster inside,
say readers
BY DAVID BRUCE
Leeds Today
THE SON of the Yorkshire Ripper's first murder victim
today backed the YEP's campaign calling for the 13-times
killer to be never released. Richard McCann, 34, who lives
in Leeds, said today: "Is there going to be silence
- or will someone make a statement and put our minds at
rest.
The Home Secretary owes us that." Mr McCann's mother,
Wilma was 28 when Sutcliffe murdered her on playing fields
close to the family home in Scott Hall Avenue, Leeds in
October 1975. Mr McCann added: "Peter Sutcliffe was
given a minimum jail sentence of 30 years for murdering
13 women.
If you divide the 30 years by the number of women he killed,
it works out at just over two years for each life! "I
have read stories in national newspapers in which Sutcliffe
apparently claims he is not mentally ill now. If that
is the case, why is he not back in prison?"
After reading last night's YEP, Mr McCann said: "Apart
from having to see his (Sutcliffe's) picture once again
I have to say that I am very pleased to see you start
your campaign for readers to write in to Charles Clarke
using the tear-away slips.
I would be very interested in hearing what, if any, response
you get from him. Messages supporting our campaign to
keep the Ripper locked up are already flooding in to the
YEP. "We agree with the Yorkshire Evening Post that
Peter Sutcliffe must never be released," said Brian
and Christine Walls, of Leeds.
Mr and Mrs S Levi of North Leeds added: "We agree
with the Yorkshire Evening Post that Peter Sutcliffe must
NEVER be released and we wish the YEP every success with
its campaign." S Jackson, of Rothwell, said: "We
wholeheartedly support the Yorkshire Evening Post.
This monster must NEVER be freed." Susan Smith, of
Tingley, said: "I do not believe that he should EVER
be released or anyone should EVER think about releasing
him." |
