17/01/99 - Ripper Files Snub
To Ex-Police Chief
Sunday Mirror
YORKSHIRE Ripper investigator Keith Hellawell has been
snubbed by his former police force after he asked to
see his old files on Peter Sutcliffe.
The ex-Chief Constable of West Yorkshire has been refused
access to notes and records he made during his interviews
with Peter Sutcliffe.
Mr Hellawell, who often spoke of the special relationship
he developed with the Ripper through his jail visits,
denies writing a book about the mass murderer but says
he wants the information for his memoirs. "My request
to the police authority was merely to lay down the ground
rules should I decide to write my life story,"
he said."
In an official statement West Yorkshire Police said:
"Crime files are confidential.
"Any records or notes from interviews with Sutcliffe
would be treated in the same way as crime files and
would also be confidential."
A spokesman refused to discuss if they had received any
requests for access to information on Sutcliffe. |
