11/02/97 - Yorkshire Ripper
stabbed in eyes in prison
The Yorkshire Ripper, Britain's most feared serial killer,
has been stabbed in the eyes by a fellow patient at his
prison hospital, prison sources said on Tuesday.
The Ripper -- lorry driver Peter Sutcliffe -- was jailed
for life in 1981 for the murders of 13 women in the northern
England county of Yorkshire and the attempted murder of
seven. The sources said Sutcliffe, 50, received serious
injuries inflicted with a felt-tipped pen in a fight on
Monday with another murderer in their top-security prison
hospital for the criminally insane.
Sutcliffe's lawyer confirmed the report and his father
John told reporters that Sutcliffe's sight had not been
impaired by the injury as doctors first feared. Sutcliffe
preyed on lone women, some of them prostitutes, in the
cities of Bradford and Leeds in a five-year reign of terror.
He gained the name the Yorkshire Ripper because of the
vicious way in which he maimed his victims after murdering
them.
David Leach, whose 20-year-old student daughter Barbara
was one of Sutcliffe's victims, told reporters ``Perhaps
now he'll have some idea of how other people have suffered.''
