05/01/01 - Bronson to sell
his brain to help Moors victim's mum
Prisoner Charles Bronson is offering to sell his brain
when he dies to help in the hunt for Moors murder victim
Keith Bennett. Bronson, who was jailed in 1974 for robbery,
has already promised Keith's mum Winnie Johnson £10,000
to launch a new search on Saddleworth Moor, in Greater
Manchester, for her son's body.
Now the 48-year-old, considered Britain's most dangerous
inmate, has offered to sell his brain to the highest
bidder to raise more cash. Bronson's spokesman Steve
Richards said: "This is not a gimmick. It will
be a legal transaction - his brain going to the buyer
on the death of Mr Bronson."
The prisoner has launched a charity called Bronson's
Children, set up with the proceeds of three books, a
video and paintings and announced that its first priority
will be to find Keith's body.
Bronson, who changed his name from Michael Peterson
in honour of the film star, has developed a formidable
reputation since being imprisoned. Over the years he
has taken 11 inmates and prison staff hostage and staged
nine rooftop protests.
Mrs Johnson has refused to condemn Bronson, saying that,
unlike Moors murderers Myra Hindley and Keith Brady,
he has never been convicted of killing anyone. She told
the Manchester Evening News that Bronson is the only
person to offer her help to find Keith's body.
She said: "As far as I am concerned he is a gentleman.
I am very grateful for what he is doing. "To be
honest his offer has built my hopes up a bit, and I
am praying to God that we can find Keith. No matter
what he may have done he has done a good turn for me.
I am proud of him for what he is doing."
