- Film untrue
by Rob Mellett
THE mother of convicted killer Jack Whomes has blasted
new gangster film EssexBoys for obscuring the truth
behind the Rettendon Range Rover murders. Angry Pam
Whomes slammed the movie after attending the premiere
at Southend Odeon on Monday.
Essex Boys is loosely based around the 1995 gangland
execution of local drugs barons Pat Tate, Craig Rolfe
and Tony Tucker. Whomes, 39, is currently serving three
life sentences in Whitemoor prison after being convicted
by the evidence of supergrass Darren Nicholls.
Mum-of-six Pam, from Suffolk, condemned the film for
creating a fictional account of the events leading up
to the Rettendon killings. "It bore no resemblance
to the true story whatsoever. I didn't enjoy it, they
should have stuck to the facts.
"Although Essex Boys didn't do our campaign to
free Jack that much harm it was an awful film, full
of violence." She had hoped the film would make
people closely associated with the Rettendon murders
break their silence and tell police who really murdered
Tate, Rolfe and Tucker, but now she isn't so sure.
"I would be amazed if anybody actually paid to
go and see Essex Boys because all it does is make villains
out to be heroes." Pam also met up with Essex Boys
author Bernard O'Mahoney, who claims his book is the
true life account of what really happened at Rettendon.
She added: "It was nice to meet Bernie. He was
a real gentleman and I must thank him for all the support
he has given us over the last few years." Last
week Jack Whomes' brother John, 38, and friend Peter
Ager, 33, were both charged under Section 22a of the
Road Traffic Act for causing a danger to road users.
The charges follow their M25 motorway protest in which
they lashed themselves to a gantry straddling the London
orbital early last month. They will appear at Basildon
magistrates court on July 27.
