By Helen Ward

A gunman was on the run today after a man was shot in Bath. A 26 year old Bath man was shot in the left leg after an argument between two families at a block of flats in Haycombe Drive, Whiteway, He also suffered head injuries.

Police are confident they know the identity of the armed man who fled the scene immediately after the shooting which happened at 1am. The seriosly injured man was taken to the Rayal United Hospital where his condition was said not to be life threatening.

Inspector Phil Nicholls, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: "It is unclear what the dispute was all about but we know that if it was between two families. "The offender is known to us but at the moment he is not at the address where we expected him to be. We are actively looking for him."

Neighbour Miss Jacqeline Wilcox, 44, who moved into the block of six flats eight weeks ago, said: "I was in bed, the bang woke me up, I didn't hear shouting. I'm used to hearing shouting, but it was the actual shot that woke me up.

"I went back to bed, I just didn'tget involved. "It hasn't put me off living here. I've lived in Whiteway all my life. It has got worse in the last couple of years, but i don't want to move out. "It was a shock that somebody was shot. You don't expect it when you're in your own block of flats."

A spokesman for Avon Ambulance said: "When our ambulance crew arrived they discovered a man with serious injuries and had to set up a drip before they took him to the RUH. "We are not sure how he got the head injury butit may be where he fell."

Residents in Haycombe Drive were shocked, when they heard about the incident this morning.
