??/??/?? - Night club shuts down

THE NIGHTCLUB where it is thought the Ecstasy tablet which killed Leah Betts was bought has been closed. Raquels in Basildon has shut its doors to party-goers until further notice. A spokeswoman for Essex police said the club voluntarily closed.

The licensing department at Pitsea police station is considering asking magistrates to terminate the club's licence, police have confirmed. Licences must be renewed every three years but police can ask the courts to revoke a licence during that period.

Raquels has a year to run on its licence. There are no plans to prosecute the nightclub in connection with Leah Betts death but the club will remain closed until a decision has been made by police.

The club was due to be refurbished, but owners halted plans until its future has been resolved. The police spokeswoman said: "Certainly there are issues as a result of the Leah Bett's inquiry that are being considered. But other things were being considered anyway the club had been asking for an extension to 4am which the police were going to oppose."

Since Leah's death the club has repeatedly insisted it makes every effort to ensure drugs are not sold on the premises.. European Leisure, owners of Raquels, were unavailable for comment.
