Pair who had murder sentences quashed face new police probe
The Mirror
EXCLUSIVE by GARY JONES
TWO sisters who had their convictions for killing a love rival
quashed are to be quizzed by detectives armed with new evidence.
Michelle and Lisa Taylor will be interviewed to determine if they
committed perjury or perverted justice.
The pair spent nearly a year in jail before an Appeal Court judge
ruled that they were wrongly convicted of murdering newly-wed
Alison Shaughnessy. The 21-year-old bank clerk was stabbed 54
times. Scotland Yard wants the case re-opened following a review
of the 10-year-old killing. A senior police source said yesterday:
There's enough new evidence to take this inquiry forward.
Sophisticated forensic techniques that were not available at the
time of Alison's death are being used to test a drop of blood
found on one of Michelle's jackets. The smear is so tiny that
it could not be analysed at the time. A suspected murder weapon
is also being re-examined. Michelle, 30, was having an affair
with Alison's husband John at the time of the stabbing. She was
killed at her home in Battersea, South London.
A Yard spokesman said: "The review is not likely to conclude
until early summer." Michelle's former lover Bernard O'Mahoney
will also be interviewed to find out if he interfered with witnesses
or tampered with evidence. O'Mahoney has agreed to speak about
an alleged false testimony concerning a vagrant said to have confessed
to the murder.
He will also give evidence about the alleged destruction of an
unfavourable video. O'Mahoney led the campaign to get Michelle
and Lisa, 27, freed. He said: "I have nothing to hide."
The sisters were freed after Appeal judges ruled that press stories
prejudiced their trial. |
