04/04/01 - Freed sisters facing
murder trial probe
GARY JONES
The Mirror
TWO sisters whose convictions for killing a love rival
were quashed are to be quizzed over new evidence. Michelle
and Lisa Taylor will be interviewed over allegations of
perjury and perverting the course of justice.
They served nearly a year of their life sentences before
the Appeal Court ruled they were wrongly convicted of
murdering Alison Shaughnessy, 21.
Judges said press coverage prejudiced the 1992 trial but
Scotland Yard wants the case re-opened. Forensic techniques
not available at the time of Alison's death are being
used to test a tiny drop of blood found on Michelle's
jacket.
A suspected murder weapon is also being re-examined. Michelle,
30, was having an affair with Alison's husband John at
the time. The newly-wed was stabbed 54 times at home in
Battersea, South London, in June 1991.
A senior police source said yesterday: "There's enough
new evidence to take this inquiry forward." Michelle's
former lover Bernard O'Mahoney will also be interviewed.
He has agreed to speak about alleged false testimony concerning
a vagrant said to have confessed to the murder and also
the alleged destruction of an "unfavourable"
video.
O'Mahoney led the campaign to get Michelle and Lisa, 27,
freed. He said: "I have nothing to hide." |
