29/01/02 - 'I STILL BELIEVE THEY'RE GUILTY'
Real Issue 2/2002
Chris Burke, the former detective superintendent who led
the murder inquiry, retired a few years after the sisters'
appeal. He stands by the police investigation and believes
they murdered Alison Shaughnessy Michelle and Lisa Taylor
may have been released, but we stand by our investigation.
There were many points of evidence against the sisters,
but there were also telling clues hidden in their behaviour.
We felt Michelle's actions upon finding Alison's body just
didn't add up. Most people have an innate fear of dead bodies.
To actually touch one is extremely unusual. But Michelle
brushed Alisons hair, pulled her skirt down and hugged and
caressed her. Who but the murderer would do that? The sisters
asked Jeanette for an alibi at 7.20pm that evening, an hour
before Alison's body was found.
Who but the suspect would know when to do that? I believe
Michelle decided to get rid of Alison to have John to herself.
Michelle was emotional during our investigation. But Lisa
was always cold and steely under interrogation.
She wasn't a frightened teenager, she was a block of ice.
She'd shoot Michelle warning looks whenever she began crying.
We were chilled by her. They got off because the criminal
justice system in Britain is so poor. It's not about truth.
It's a game where an elite play with the rules and regulations.
I joined the force and worked there for 27 years because
I believed in honesty and integrity. I investigated 26 murder
inquiries and solved them all.
I think Lisa and Michelle have probably convinced themselves
they didn't do it. If you commit such a horrendous crime,
how else could you deal with it?
The Tayior sisters have pointed out that they were never
interviewed directly by Chris Burke during the investigation.
