??/??/?? - woman tells of love for 'a charmer'
By John Steele, Courts Correspondent

MICHELLE Taylor did not want to be the "permanent lover" of John Shaughnessy, whose wife, Alison, she denies murdering, the Old Bailey was told yesterday.

Taylor, 21, said in an alleged interview after her arrest that she did not believe she and Mr Shaughnessy would have got on if they had been married, as they were not each other's type.

Mr Shaughnessy was the first man she had slept with, and she had "hated" the then Alison Blackmore when she discovered from someone else that the man she loved was engaged to her and had not told her.

But in police interviews after her arrest on Aug 7 last year she added that she also felt sorry for Mrs Shaughnessy and they later became friends. When told she was being arrested for the murder she said: "I have not done it."

Transcripts of her interviews were read to the jury on the seventh day of the trial in which she and her sister, Lisa, 18, both of Forest Hill, south London, deny murdering Mrs Shaughnessy, 21.

"He even had a ring on his engaged finger, and when I said, when I first met him, I said 'Are you engaged?' and he said 'No', I said: 'Oh, you just wear a ring on that finger?' and he said 'Yes'."

This discovery by Taylor led to a break in their relationship in which she did not speak to him for a couple of months. "Then, after a while, things just seemed to go back." Her feelings for him had not died, she said.

Asked about her feelings then towards Alison, who did not know about Mr Shaughnessy's affair with her, she said: "When I first found out and I first knew about it, inside I suppose I hated her for being with him, but at the same time I felt sorry for her for being with someone who was with someone else."

She told the officer: "Me and John talked about what it would be like if we were married, but every time I would say to him that we would not get on if we were married.

I don't think we would have got on if we were together all the time." The Shaughnessys were married in June 1990 and Taylor attended the ceremony in Ireland. She had a great time, staying with Mrs Shaughnessy's relatives.

She said the bride had told her she was glad she had come over and that they were good friends.
