TWO-timing John Shaughnessy claimed his wife would have forgiven him for his affair with Michelle Taylor. He insisted: "I don't see that I let her down." Romeo Shaughnessy, who had a string of other girlfriends and was engaged four times before he wed, said: "Loads of men have affairs and they don't finish up having their wives murdered.

"I never dreamed it could end up this way but I know she would have forgiven me for having the affair. We were devoted to each other." Shaughnessy, 30, said he wished he had never set eyes on Michelle, who was yesterday jailed for life with her sister Lisa for murdering Alison.

He added: "I should not have let the bitch get under my skin. I wasn't chasing Michelle, she was pestering me. But I know I should never have had anything to do with her. "I wasn't an angel and it was my fault for not saying no, but I don't see why I should feel guilty because I was having an affair.

"I don't want people to feel sorry for me in any respect. "But it's like I'm in the dock and I haven't committed a crime." Shaughnessy discovered his wife's body with Michelle after she gave him a lift home from work. That night Michelle drove him to her family house after they gave statements to police.

Shaughnessy said: "When she drove me to her home that night she wanted to break my heart. "She had killed my wife and was enjoying my pain" Shaughnessy told how he sat with Alison's body for hours in the mortuary. He said: "I was just holding her hand. "I stroked her hair.

I loved her hair even though it got in my face when we were in bed. "While I was stroking her hair I could feel a bump on the back of her head where she had been hit. "Finally the staff had to ask me to leave because they wanted to shut."

Shaughnessy said he and Alison had talked of starting a family the night before she died. "We spoke about having kids and it was something we both wanted very much. "I said to All, 'Provided the baby has your lovely brown eyes' and she said, 'As long as it has your dimples.' He said he no longer wants to live without his wife and had contemplated killing himself.

"She should be living a fun life now. I just wish it was me who was dead and Alison living. "I hope a bus runs me over because my life is already finished." Shaughnessy has reserved a plot next to his wife's at the church where they married in Piltown, Co Kilkenny.

He said: "I just want to be with her. We were so happy together. "I would not like to marry again. Alison can never be replaced. "I loved Alison and was totally devoted to her. I would never have left her for Michelle and the thought never crossed my mind.

"I never considered myself to be Michelle's boyfriend. "I didn't know the full extent of her feelings. I just thought it was something casual. "I am not the sort of bloke who likes to put it around. "I would rather have a quiet drink at the bar or a cup of tea at home."

His sister Ann Giblin said: "We're standing by John. No matter what happens he is still my brother and I love him. "He has not committed any crime. He just fell for women." His mum Florrie said: "I don't care what was said in court, John was devoted to Alison."

Mrs Shaughnessy, a mother of 11, added:' "John is the salt of the earth. "He is the type of son who would give you his last pound if he had it."
