LONDON TONIGHT
First a new twist in the case of the so-called 'Evil Sisters'
Lisa and Michelle TAYLOR. The London sisters were convicted
of the murder of Alison SHAUGHNESSY and sentenced to life
in prison, but London Tonight has learnt of new evidence,
a claimed confession by a man who says he stabbed Alison
to death, and that evidence will be central to the TAYLOR
sisters' appeal next Thursday. This exclusive report from
Christopher PEACOCK.
CHRIS PEACOCK
Life on the seedy side of the Strand, a twilight world that
tourists pass by on the other side, and it's here that new
claims have come to light that a down and outer became a
killer, stalking and then murdering Alison SHAUGHNESSY who
worked close by at this bank. Two sisters are serving life
for her murder, but did they do it? The down and out who's
never been charged is said to have confessed to a social
worker that he killed a girl in Battersea at the same time
as Alison's body was found at her flat in Vardens Road.
"He carries a knife" said the social worker, "He's
told me that he's done a girl". I said "What do
you mean?", he said "Killed her, stabbed her".
He's very calm about it, that's what is so frightening.
London Tonight knows the identity of the man who made the
alleged confession. We cannot, for obvious legal reasons
give you the name now, but next week here at the Court of
Appeal three judges will hear the evidence. Police confirm
they did have the down and out under serveillance, but switched
to the TAYLOR sisters after they found Michelle's diary.
Jealousy over Alison, the jury decided, was motive for the
murder. Michelle had been John SHAUGHNESSY's mistress before
his wedding to Alison, but the family say the jigsaw doesn't
fit, they want the down and out found and charged.
ANN TAYLOR
The evidence that we have now and what we have been told
would have been enough to have charged this guy, but it
seems as though as soon as they found Michelle's diaries
it was quite easy for them to fit the girls Into what they
wanted.
CHRIS PEACOCK
But the police say that Michelle and Lisa TAYLOR were found
guilty beyond all reasonable doubt by an Old Bailey jury.
The judge told them it was a terrible crime they'd committed.
Next week the family will appeal to three High Court judges
claiming a miscarriage of justice.
ANN TAYLOR
It's very important that we carry on fighting for our girls,
not just for them but for everybody involved. Hopefully
the girls will be released, but they're not going to say
that our girls are Innocent, they will say that the verdict
is unsafe and unsatisfactory. Well as far as we're concerned
that isn't good enough.

...officers handled the case against two sisters, Michelle
and Lisa TAYLOR. They were jailed for life for the murder
of bank clerk Alison SHAUGHNESSY, but their sentences were
quashed by the Appeal Court last month. Michelle and Lisa
TAYLOR have made formal complaints about the way the case
against them was investigated by the Metropolitan Police.
Now the Police Complaints Authority will supervise an examination
of the original investigation two years ago.
MICHELLE
The officers withheld papers that they didn't disclose all
the paperwork that they had, that should like definitely
be investigated, and the way the officers well treated us.
LISA
Conducted themselves really, yeah.
MICHELLE
Yeah.
COMMENTATOR
The investigation will be carried out by members of the
same force which handled the case against the TAYLOR sisters
two years ago.
NEW SCOTLAND YARD SPOKESMAN
Whilst I would hope the investigation will be undertaken
within a matter of weeks, I think it's fair to say that
clearly that will be dependent on us being able to undertake
all the steps that I wish to take.
COMMENTATOR
When the investigation is complete, the results may be considered
by the Crown Prosecution Service.
