I have worked at the CHURCHILL PRIVATE CLINIC since 060787, Initially I was employed in the Accounts Department and in 000988 I became the Bought Ledger Clerk, this meant I was responsible for paying the bills incurred by John SHAUGHNESSY, who is the Assistant Purchasing Manager.

As a result of coming into contact with John we became friends, In 000789 I became aware that John was engaged to a girl called Alison BLACKMORE, During the course of their engagement I became friends with Alison, In 000590 I moved from my parents house into hospital provided accommodation.

This consists of three large terraced houses which inter-connect by fire escape doors. My room was on the ground floor and John's room was on the second floor in the next door house. The connecting door is also on the second floor, John has two Jobs within the hospital, in addition to his purchasing job he also tends to the gardens.

This second job includes arranging flowers for the hospital. I have taken to helping John with the flower arranging, The reason I got involved with floral arrangements is that it is my long term ambition to start my own business in catering and the ability to arrange flowers would be an asset.

To this end, I changed my job within the hospital to being a domestic in 000491, This job entails serving food to our patients and cleaning rooms after a patient has been discharged and preparing them for the next patient. As a domestic I work 1530 to 2030 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday; this is another advantage giving me three days to concentrate on catering.

At the moment I make cakes for people which provides pocket money, In addition I help my father seven days a week with his window cleaning and office cleaning business. When I helped John with the flower arranging he gave me perhaps five pounds, but not regularly, not every time.

Sometimes he would offer and if I didn't need or want the money I would decline the offer. This arrangement started because I filled in for John when he was on holiday. It was intended that I was to take over this job because John wanted to spend more time with Alison.

Our friendship had grown to the extent that I was invited to their wedding, which took place on 230690 in PILTOWN, SOUTHERN IRELAND. I travelled over with John and Alison in the car John hired, I stayed with Alison's relations for about a week.

After their marriage, Alison moved into John's room and it was quite common for me to visit their room and watch television with them and for Alison to visit my room, Occasionally we would go out together and also Alison and I would go out for a drink or pizza while John was working.

My relationship with both of them was good friends. On Sunday 020691 I had worked the 1530 to 2030 shift and stayed the night at my hostel. On Monday 030691 I got up at 0500 and drove to the ARNDALE SHOPPING CENTRE, WANDSWORTH, I helped my father and sister Lisa to clean windows and the floors of the WOOLWORTHS STORE.

This took until about 0930, My sister and I left my father and travelled in my car to the FIRE STATION at SANDERSTEAD, where we cleaned and polished the floors, We left at about 1330, We both then went home to my parent's house and had a wash and change of clothes.

I put on a black hooded top, green tracksuit bottoms and white Nike trainers, I did not change again on 030691. My sister and I then travelled to BROMLEY to shop for a dress for Lisa. Lisa is eighteen next month. We then went from BROMLEY to my hostel, arriving at about 1715.

We went for a drink with a friend JJ, Jannette Jaqueline TAPP, who lives in a room next to the room that was occupied by John. John and Alison had moved out in 000291 and went to live at Flat 3, 41 VARDENS ROAD, BATTERSEA. At 1800 I left Lisa with JJ and went to meet John to do the flower arranging.

I met him by going through the reception to a table outside the 'smoking room'. John had already bought the flowers. It was customary for the flowers to be bought by John from the flower stall at WATERLOO run by Buster EDWARDS. John normally buys about forty or fifty pounds worth and pays using his own cheque book.

If I buy the flowers John pops down the following day and pays the bill. We set about arranging the flowers, which took us until about 2000. During this time we were together throughout, if we left one another for the toilet or a drink from the fountain, we were only separate for a matter of a couple of minutes.

During the two hour period we were seen by a number of people, At 1745 some domestic staff used the 'smoking room'. A nurse and the matron, whose name is Sheila, went to the pharmacy which is nearby, Lisa and JJ visited us at about 1930 to see if we wanted something to eat from the fish and chip shop.

We arranged five separate arrangements and distributed them, three in the reception area and two in MRI Department, Both these departments were staffed when we put out the flowers. I remember seeing David ALEXANDER, the Chief Executive, in reception.

At 2000 we tidied up the table and as was normal, I was going to drive John home. I had a stomach upset that day and needed to use the lavatory, so I arranged to meet John at my car, which was parked in the drive outside the hostel, I went back to the hostel, used the lavatory, spoke to Lisa who was now playing I think Monopoly with JJ.

I told Lisa I wouldn't be long and went down to meet John, We drove to John's house in VARDENS ROAD using the WANDSWORTH ROAD, LAVENDER HILL, ST JOHN'S ROAD passing the GRANADA BINGO HALL and turning second left into VARDENS ROAD.

There was no parking spaces available in VARDENS ROAD, so I went by their house, turned left and parked. We then walked back towards the house together. I saw nothing unusual in the road. I saw a policeman walking towards us. He wore a tunic, a helmet but I'm unable to remember the colour of his shirt.

He passed us just about the time we were on the steps of No. 41. It's quite normal for me to go into John and Alison's flat for a chat after I give John a lift, I normally have a drink of orange juice or water. Additionally, on this occasion I needed to use the toilet again and also John had asked me to run two vases or tubs back to the hospital.

As things turned out I never saw the vases and all thoughts of going to the toilet were forgotten. When John and I reached the door John was carrying a bunch of flowers and a briefcase, He tried to unlock the lower lock first and said, "That's funny, Alison usually locks the door."

Although he said this, neither of us registered any alarm at this stage or feared anything was seriously wrong. We entered the hall and John unlocked his own door and we went upstairs, John in the lead. He suddenly cried out, "Alison, Alison," and I looked up to the second landing and saw Alison lying on the floor.

John stepped over Alison's body and was looking into her face. I tried to lift Alison, but she was heavy and stiff. I felt Alison's neck for a pulse. I'm a little confused as to what happened next, but I know I kept going back and touching Alison and John was standing on the landing and he kept repeating, "I don't know what's happened."

Eventually I realised Alison was dead and I started to panic and scream, John ran to Mr CASEY's house to use the telephone, I remembered the policeman in the street and ran outside. John hadn't got an answer from Mr CASEY, so I ran across the road to use the telephone in the pub.

I ran into the pub and asked the barmaid with short dark hair to ring for the police, I told her someone was dead. There was a group of people seated by the window, a woman from this group tried to comfort me and said she would come back with me.

When we left the pub the woman and three or four of the men crossed the road with us and we all went into the house. As I crossed the road I remember seeing John standing on the steps. The woman from this group was aged about 35-40 with grey hair, All the men went up the stairs, but the woman stayed with me on the landing.

Then they all came down and went towards the street door. I went back to Alison's body, I pulled down her skirt, which was up showing her briefs, moved her hair and stroked it. By doing this I got blood on my hands and I went up to the bathroom.

I didn't think to use the toilet which was nearer, I washed my hands and used the flannel and towel. I felt the need of fresh air and opened a window. The window I opened was not locked, all I had to do was push it up on the sash. To my best recollection, this was the window on the first landing, the one beneath Alison's body.

A few moments later the police arrived and I mentioned the window to the woman police officer who talked to me. Throughout these events I do not feel that I moved Alison in any physical way, With regard to John and Alison's friends, I only know that a girl from Alison's bank attended the wedding with her boyfriend.

She had ginger hair. I do not know anybody John was friendly with, although he got along with most people. I know that they used to go to the pub in CLAPHAM JUNCTION, opposite ARDING AND HOBBS, The car I drive is a white Ford Sierra 1.6L estate, registration mark RHX958Y.
