On 040691 I performed a post mortem examination on the body
of Alison SHAUGHNESSY at WANDSWORTH PUBLIC MORTUARY and
I give as the cause of death:
1. a) HAEMORRHAGE due to b) MULTIPLE STAB WOUNDS
I produce my report:
I attended FLAT 3, 41 VARDENS ROAD, SW11 at 2340 on 030691
where I met Detective Superintendent GLENDINNING and other
officers. I was shown a body lying on a stair landing, which
was identified to me by WPC 858WA MACDONALD as being that
of Alison SHAUGHNESSY aged 21.
The body was lying on the front with the legs apart, All
clothing appeared to be in place and undisturbed. Stab wounds
could be seen on the left leg and left wrist, I confined
my examination at the scene to assessing the liver temperature
which was 89 degrees Farenheit, suggesting death at about
1800 on 030691, Rigor was almost complete.
I attended WANDSWORTH PUBLIC MORTUARY at ST, GEORGE'S HOSPITAL
MEDICAL SCHOOL at 1430 on 040691 where I again met the above
officers and the Coroner's Officer, Mr EDEN. The body of
Alison SHAUGHNESSY was photographed both clothed and unclothed
under my direction.
The body was that of a moderately well nourished young woman,
5'3 in height and weighing 8 3/4 stones. There was recent
bruising of the bridge of the nose. There was an abrasion
at the inner end of the left eyebrow and also multiple small
abrasions on the upper and lower lips with some slight laceration
inside the upper lip.
There was deep scalp bruising at the back of the head. There
were fifty four recent stab wounds on the body. These varied
from small pricks to wounds 1 1/4" in length, A number
of these suggested a single-edged blade. There was a 1"
long horizontal wound in the centre of the base of the throat.
The track of this wound was backwards and to the right,
slicing open the windpipe and also cutting the carotid artery.
It ended posteriorly on the seventh rib, a distance of about
5", after scoring the surface of the lung, Haemorrhage
from the cut carotid artery had been inhaled and there was
a large amount of frothy blood in the lungs.
There were ten other stab wounds on the front of the neck,
The left ear lobe was sliced and there was a stab wound
on the right side of the back of the neck. In addition,
there were three parallel scratches or superficial incisions
down the right side of the neck onto the chest.
There was a 1 1/4" long stab wound just to the left
of the midline of the upper breast bone. There appeared
to be two tracks from this wound. One sliced into the right
second costal cartilage, The other passed under the left
costal cartilage and passed down behind the ribs.
There were six other stab wounds on the front of the chest.
The incision for assessing the liver temperature is ringed
in the photographs. There were fourteen stab wounds on the
back, most on the left. One of these had a track which passed
under the left seventh rib and then almost transfixed the
left lung, a distance of about 4".
There were eight stab wounds on the left side of the back,
left buttock and back of the left thigh. There were eight
stab wounds on the back of the left shoulder, upper and
lower arm, There were abrasions on the back of the proximal
joints of the left first and second fingers.
There was a stab wound on the back of the right hand and
the long fingernail of the right little finger had almost
been torn off. There was an abrasion on the front of the
right knee and a scratch on the front of the left knee.
There was a stab wound on the front of the left thigh, together
with three pricks from the point of a knife.
There were two 1" long stab wounds just above the left
groin. One of these penetrated into the abdominal cavity
but did not appear to have injured any internal organs.
SKELETAL SYSTEM
Normal
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
The brain was normal. There was no evidence of injury to
the brain or its coverings.
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
The heart was not enlarged. There was no coronary atheroma.
The myocardium and valves were normal.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
There were injuries to the lungs and airway as above. There
was partial collapse of the left lung due to blood in the
pleural cavity.
INTESTINAL SYSTEM
There was a partly digested small meal apparently containing
peas, in the stomach. The liver was normal. The gall bladder
was empty.
GENITO-URINARY SYSTEM
There were about three ounces of pale, cloudy urine in the
bladder, There was a normal non pregnant uterus. There was
no evidence of injury to the external or internal genitalia.
SPECIMENS
The windpipe and lungs were preserved in formalin, Portions
of body organs were retained for microscopy, Blood, urine,
stomach contents, liver with gall bladder, pubic and head
hair, finger nail clippings and oral, rectal and vaginal
swabs were handed to the Laboratory Liaison Officer.
CONCLUSIONS
Death was due to haemorrhage from multiple stab wounds.
Two wounds involved the windpipe and left lung and produced
the most significant haemorrhage, All the wounds would be
consistent with a sharp knife with a blade about 5"
long and about 1" in width. The wounds would also suggest
that it was probably single edged.
CAUSE OF DEATH
1 a) Haemorrhage due to b) Multiple stab wounds
