SECOND REPORT RE: MURDER OF ALISON JANE SHAUGHNESSY

176. This subsequent report deals with additional evidence which was not available when the original report was compiled.

177. To assist the reader, this report is divided into the following sections:-

(A) Additional background of Allson and John SHAUGHNESSY including their wedding in June 1990.

(B) Information regarding Michelle and Lisa TAYLOR's participation in Ju-Jitsu and other activities.

(C) Evidence from Staff at Churchill Clinic regarding the suspected affair between John SHAUGHNESSY and Michelle TAYLOR, and their movements on 3rd June 1991, the day of the murder.

(D) Interviews of Michelle and Lisa TAYLOR, John SHAUGHNESSY, Jeanette TAPP and Mr and Mrs TAYLOR on 24th July 1991 when they were all interviewed as potential witnesses.

(E) Evidence of Police Officers at scene on 3rd / 4th June 1991 and fingerprint evidence discovered at 41 VARDENS ROAD, BATTERSEA SW11.

(F) The subsequent arrest of defendants TAYLOR, and Jeanette TAPP on 7th August 1991.

(G) The Murder Scene.

(H) Other forensic evidence and evidence from Trustee Savings Bank outlining cash withdrawal by Michelle TAYLOR on 3rd June 1991.

(I) Arrest of Derek TAYLOR and subsequent action.

178. (A) ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND - Alison Jane SHAUGHNESSY and John SHAUGHNESSY Prior and subsequent to Alison's marriage to John SHAUGHNESSY, she confided in Ann Marie WALSH (cousin) and Valerie Margaret LYNCH (friend) her dislike of Michelle TAYLOR, and her suspicions that Michelle had damaged and stolen some of her clothing, whilst residing at the Churchill Clinic.

179. Character and general information regarding Alison's background is outlined in her aunt, Stella WALSH's statement. It includes conversation between herself and Michelle TAYLOR on the morning of Alison and John's wedding. Also Alison's depressed mood as to the reception Michelle TAYLOR was given on her visits to Ireland.

180. Eileen WALSH, Alison's Godmother and resident of Piltown, Co. Kilkenny confirms Michelle TAYLOR and other friends of John and Alison SHAUGHNESSY staying at her home (Bed and Breakfast) prior to the wedding on 23.6.90. Mrs WALSH further recalls Michelle TAYLOR's concern over the state of John SHAUGHNESSY's clothing upon his arrival at the house two days before the wedding.

181. BARCLAYS BANK - Alison SHAUGHNESSY's Supervisor at Barclays Bank in the Strand, Sandie GRAHAM, outlines Alison's employment history with the bank, speaking very highly of her, both from a professional and personal point of view.

182. Shirley Louise GONSALVES a Bank Clerk, and former colleague of Alison SHAUGHNESSY, recalls Alison writing a letter on 3rd June 1991 during her lunch break. (This is the letter recovered from the victim's handbag - Exhibit CS/102).

183. Tijen CEMAL a former employee at Barclays Bank, recalls Alison visiting her house shortly after her wedding and stating that she (Alison) hoped to start a family in 1991.

184. On 9th August 1991 John SHAUGHNESSY was interviewed at his home address, which resulted in a lengthy statement (73 pages) being compiled over a three day period. In summary he stated the following points:-

i) Intending to start a family with his wife, which was not common knowledge.

ii) That it was well known that Alison and he had intended returning to Ireland to take up permanent residence.

iii) That the affair with Michelle TAYLOR commenced in March 1989 and of his engagement to Alison in April the same year.

iv) Details of his relationship with Michelle TAYLOR prior and subsequent to his wedding.

v) In March 1991 Michelle TAYLOR begins driving him home to VARDENS ROAD, on Monday nights and that it was unusual for her (Michelle) to enter the flat. That only occurred on some two occasions.

vi) How Michelle was always reluctant to accept money for helping with the flower arranging.

vii) The close relationship between Michelle, her sister Lisa, and Jeanette TAPP.

viii) Commencing weight training and keep-fit classes with Michelle TAYLOR in 1989.

ix) In September 1990 the friendship between Alison and Michelle became more distant.

x) Having moved into VARDENS ROAD, how Michelle stayed there on one occasion and wanted to sleep with him but he declined. Alison was staying with her parents that particular night. How Michelle used his house keys to let herself out of the flat the following morning.

xi) That Michelle rang him at the Clinic on 3rd June 1991 and stated that she may be delayed to assist with the flower arranging.

xii) How Michelle arrived at the Clinic at 6.20pm. on 3rd June.

xiii) Repeats details of finding his wife's body that night.

xiv) That on the 6th July 1991 whilst at his brother's wedding in Ireland, how Michelle slept in his bedroom and attempted to make love to him, but he declined.

xv) Disputes certain comments recorded in Michelel TAYLOR's Notebook. (Exhibit AS/13).

185. (B) JU-JITSU CLUB re: Michelle and Lisa TAYLOR Vincent Michael McCOY, a member of the AKROYD CENTRE CLUB run by Colin ELGIE in 1987, states how he knew Michelle TAYLOR whilst at the club, and her physical ability whilst participating in classes.

186. Colin ELGIE - (Ju-Jitsu Instructor) recalls Lisa TAYLOR's attendance at his club.

187. John EDWARDS (Ju-Jitsu Instructor) recalls Michelle and Lisa TAYLOR's attendance at the Croydon Y.M.C.A. some three years ago. Further recalls the attention that Michelle showed towards him.

188. Errol Frederick FIELD - (Ju-Jitsu Club Owner) states how Michelle and Lisa TAYLOR joined one of his classes having left the club run by Colin ELGIE, and their subsequent progress whilst attending classes.

189. Statements were obtained from the Morley College, Westminster Bridge Road, outlining Michelle TAYLOR and John SHAUGHNESSY's enrolment and attendance at Weight Training / Keep fit classes in 1989/1990. Details are contained in the statements of Paul SOUTHWELL and David NORMAND-HARRIS.

190. (C) CHURCHILL CLINIC - LAMBETH ROAD The following witnesses recall their suspicions regarding the relationship between John SHAUGHNESSY and Michelle TAYLOR whilst both were employed at the Clinic, and their respective movements on 3rd June 1991, the day of the murder.

191. Dr John MATHIAS states that in late 1990 he recalls noticing marks/scars on Michelle TAYLOR's face, whereupon she stated it was a result of her martial arts training.

192. Timothy LANCASTER - (Nurse at Clinic) states that he 'dated' Michelle TAYLOR whilst she was employed at the Clinic, and his suspicions regarding a relationship between Michelle and John SHAUGHNESSY.

193. Alan TUCK - (Hospital Purchasing Manager) outlines John SHAUGHNESSY's employment history at the Clinic and verifies some of his movements on 3rd June 1991.

194. Jacqueline PIERCE WILLIAMS - (Credit Controller), recalls Michelle TAYLOR's apparent infatuation towards John SHAUGHNESSY.

195. Sally PEEK - (Administration Officer), in addition to her statement dated 7.8.91 recalls that some 18 months/two years ago, how Michelle TAYLOR described in detail breaking someone's arm.

196. Anne-Marie OWENS - (Patients Accounts Supervisor), in addition to her statement dated 19.6.91 recalls seeing scratches on Lisa TAYLOR's face, and being informed it was as a result of a fight she had been involved in.

197. Peter MIDDLETON - (Services Manager), describes Michelle TAYLOR as having a very "changeable personality, introvert and secretive". Confirms both John SHAUGHNESSY and Michelle TAYLOR's residency in the staff accommodation at the Clinic.

198. David ALEXANDER - (Chief Executive), confirms seeing Michelle TAYLOR at the Clinic on 3.6.91, but not before 7.15pm.

199. Gordon McCURDY - (Night Porter) recalls that when on duty at the Clinic on 3.6.91 he received a call at about 9.00pm. from Mrs TAYLOR, requesting to speak to her daughter Michelle. Upon receiving 'no reply' Mrs TAYLOR stated she would phone back later. Some 10 to 15 minutes later, a second call was received from Mrs TAYLOR again requesting to speak to her daughter.

Whilst attempting to connect the call, Mr McCURDY received another call, this time from Michelle TAYLOR wishing to speak to her sister. She was informed that her mother was on another line, whereupon she said "Don't put her through (meaning her mother) let me talk to my sister." McCURDY states that Michelle TAYLOR sounded very distressed whilst on the phone. Michelle was subsequently put through to her sister; Mrs TAYLOR being informed that the extension line was busy.

200. Sylvia Lilian COOK - (Marketing Manager), confirms speaking to John SHAUGHNESSY in her office on 3.6.91 at 4.50pm.

201. John FORAN - (Maintenance Technician), a colleague and friend of John SHAUGHNESSY recalls seeing him at the Clinic on 3.6.91 at 5.00pm., but not Michelle or Lisa TAYLOR. He further states having a conversation with the defendants prior to John and Alison SHAUGHNESSY's wedding. Both females stated that the marriage wouldn't last as Alison was the wrong girl for John.

202. Lindsey BEECROFT - (Medical Secretary), states that on 3.6.91 she saw both John SHAUGHNESSY and Michelle TAYLOR working in the 'MRI' Department in the basement of the Clinic, arranging flowers between 6pm. and 6.15pm.

203. Christina ROBERTSON - (Radiographer), states that between 6.00pm. and 6.05pm. on 3.6.91 she was awaiting her relief, when she saw Michelle TAYLOR walk down the corridor past her department in the basement, and commencing working on the flower display in a waiting room.

204. Kevin BARKER - (Porter), confirms seeing both John SHAUGHNESSY and Michelle TAYLOR working on the flower display near the Pharmacy at 8.00pm.

205. John SHAUGHNESSY - (Statement dated 6.9.91) further states that when heleft the Clinic on 3.6.91 to collect the flowers at Waterloo, he cannot recall seeing Michelle TAYLOR's car parked outside the Clinic, neither was it there upon his return with the flowers.

206. Edward BURDEN - the Area Manager of Initial Contract Service produces the 'Satisfaction Note' (Exhibit EAB/1) from Sanderstead Fire Station for 3.6.91 for the cleaning work carried out that day.

207. Patricia TIMLIN - nee KEANE - (Additional Statement dated 9.9.91 and 25.9.91). Mrs TIMLIN clarifies the dates of her visit to Ireland with Michelle TAYLOR in June 1991. She details her delay in returning to the UK as a result of Michelle TAYLOR not arriving at Dublin Airport on appropriate date. Additional statement (25.9.91) clarifies error in statement dated 15.9.91. Also note that since original statement was obtained, Miss KEANE has married and is now referred to as Mrs TIMLIN.

208. (D) ATTENDANCE 0F TAYLOR'S FAMILY, ETC AS WITNESSES AT POLICE STATION In the original Report Paragraph 137 is incorrect. The following information clarifies error:- On 24th July 1991 Lisa and Michelle TAYLOR were invited to BATTERSEA POLICE STATION, Jeanette TAPP to LAVENDER HILL POLICE STATION, and John SHAUGHNESSY to EARLSFIELD POLICE STATION. Mr and Mrs TAYLOR were not invited to attend any Police Station but decided of their own accord to accompany their daughters to BATTERSEA POLICE STATION.

209. Michelle TAYLOR - The notes of her interview (Paragraph 140) are now produced by Woman Detective Constable THOMAS as Exhibit AT/1. No additional statement was taken on that day.

210. Lisa TAYLOR - The notes of her interview (Paragraph 140) are now produced by Detective Constable GALLAGHER as Exhibit AJG/4.

211. Mrs Ann TAYLOR - (Mother of Michelle and Lisa) On 24.7.91 during the course of making a statement to Acting Detective Sergeant LAING and Detective Constable GIBSON, notes were also recorded of additional conversation. These notes are now produced by A/DS LAING as Exhibit ML/2 and by DC GIBSON as Exhibit KG/1: the officers recording their own account of the conversation.

212. No notes were recorded when the statement was taken from Mr Derek TAYLOR by Detective Sergeant SAUNDERS.

213. Jeanette TAPP - (See Paragraph 142) - The statement taken from TAPP on 24.7.91 is produced by Detective Sergeant GLEESON as Exhibit BG/13. The notes of that interview are produced as BG/12. In addition the original statement taken from Jeanette TAPP on 13.6.91 at the Churchill Clinic is now produced by Detective Constable WESTON as Exhibit KW/1.

214. John SHAUGHNESSY - When interviewed at Earlsfield Police Station on 24.7.91 by Detective Sergeants BATCH and GARROD. Notes were made by Detective Sergeant HATCH and are now produced as Exhibit PH/1.

215. Following the interview of Michelle TAYLOR on 24.7.91 a subsequent search was made of her vehicle, (White Sierra Estate, Index No. RHX 958Y) at Battersea Police Station with her consent by Detective Constable SUMMERS. A black jacket was recovered from the rear seat of the vehicle and is produced by DC SUMMERS as Exhibit AS/12. Further mention of this jacket and its submission to the forensic laboratory is made later in this report.
