216. Prior to Alison SHAUGHNESSY's body being discovered on 3.6.91 James Neal HEWITT of 15 VARDENS ROAD was returning from work at about 5.35pm. with his girlfriend Arabella HOARE (currently abroad - not interviewed). As they walked into Vardens Road from St John's Hill, Mr HEWITT noticed a white Estate car parked on the junction blocking the road. He cannot recall if the occupant was male or female. When his girlfriend is spoken to in due course, it is hoped that she can shed further light on this vehicle and its occupants.

217. (E) Statements are attached from Uniform Officers who preserved continuity of the scene on 3rd and 4th June 1991. Nothing of any relevance is contained in their statements.

218. A statement is now attached from the initial Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Superintendent Thomas GLENDINNING regarding his attendance at the murder scene.

219. Fingerprint Evidence (See Paragraphs 148 /149) Mr Eric MILNE, Senior Identification Officer, produces evidence of Lisa TAYLOR's fingerprints recovered at scene.

220. (F) ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE CONCERNING ARRESTS of Michelle and Lisa TAYLOR and Jeanette TAPP Statements have now been obtained and are attached from the following officers:- Detective Constable Trevor DAVIES corroborating Detective Sergeant GLEESON upon entry and search at 76 KEMBLE ROAD, SE23 on 7/8/91. 223. lan Jack WEIGHTMAN (Housing Officer), confirms ownership of Flat 3, 41 Vardens Road by Thames Housing Association, Balham, and its history of occupancy, and decoration.

224. (H) FORENSIC AND MEDICAL EVIDENCE Doctor Margaret STARK (FME), confirms taking a blood sample from John SHAUGHNESSY on 24.7.91 which was compared with a vaginal swab taken from victim's body. It has been confirmed verbally by the laboratory that the spermotoza present in the victim's body is that of her husband. Doctor STARK further produces an additional statement regarding the examination of Michelle TAYLOR and the taking of intimate/non-intimate samples on 7.8.91 whilst she was in custody.

225. Doctor Peter GREEN (FME), attended Battersea Police Station on 8.8.91 and examined Lisa TAYLOR upon request of the interviewing officer Detective Sergeant GLEESON, and confirms injuries to her arms.

226. John BIRKETT (Forensic Scientist), examined footwear belonging to Lisa TAYLOR with outstanding shoe marks found at Flat 3, 41 Vardens Road. The examination proved negative. Additionally he examined yale locks removed from scene and states that neither lock showed any signs of having been tampered with.

227. Detective Constable GALLAGHER confirms obtaining Pools Coupons from John SHAUGHNESSY (Exhibit AJG/16). These coupons are previously mentioned by John SHAUGHNESSY in his statement. Detective Constable GALLAGHER further produces two large plant pots removed from Flat 3, 41 Vardens Road. (Exhibits AJG/6 and AJG/7 respectively).

228. Detective Constable DAVIES (Deputy Exhibits Officer), confirms deputising as Exhibits Officer during Detective Constable SMITH's absence, and the continuity of exhibits.

229. Detective Constable SUMMERS produces the palm and fingerprints taken from Michelle TAYLOR on 8.8.91 as Exhibit AS/29.

230. Police Constable PARRY produces a list of motor vehicle registration numbers recorded in Vardens Road and Strathblaine Road on 3.6.91.

231. BANK ACCOUNT DETAILS / WITHDRAWALS BY DEFENDANTS Enquiries are now completed at the Trustee Savings Bank, Sydenham Road, Sydenham SE26. The following information being disclosed:-

1. Details of current accounts held by both Michelle and Lisa TAYLOR.
2. Details of a cash withdrawal from the National Westminster Bank Servicetill (Lambeth North Branch) on 3.6.91 by means of a Cashcard held by Michelle TAYLOR. The above information is contained in the statements of Kevin TROTT (Bank Manager) who produces a copy of statement sheet No.38 (account held by Michelle TAYLOR) as Exhibit KRT/1.

He further produces copies of both Michelle and Lisa TAYLORS' bank statements covering the period 1990/91 as Exhibits KRT/2 and KRT/3 respectively. Deborah PENNY (Bank Enquiries Clerk), produces details of cash withdrawal on 3.6.91 at National Westminster Bank, by way of Exhibit DP/1.

232. (I) ARREST OF DEREK TAYLOR Detective Sergeant SAUNDERS gives evidence of arrest of Derek TAYLOR for possession and confiscation of offensive weapon (Mop containing home made knife - Exhibit TD/1 and TD/2). The current position with regard to Derek TAYLOR is as follows:-

He has elected trial at the Crown Court. Committal date from South Western Magistrates Court is 24.10.91.

233. Detective Constable DAVIES corroborates DS SAUNDERS in the arrest of Derek TAYLOR and produces above exhibits TD/1 and TD/2.

234. A subsequent statement dated 11.10.91 has been obtained from DC DAVIES clarifying his production of Exhibits TD/2, TD/3, TD/4 and TD/1 and TD/2.

235. Mr. Michael Rufus CROMPTON (Pathologist), examined home made knife recovered by Detective Constable DAVIES from Derek TAYLOR (Exhibit TD/2) and compared with injuries inflicted on victim.

236. To clarify the abovementioned exhibits, Mr CROMPTON examined three knives (Exhibits TD/2, TD/3 and TD/4) which came into the possession of Police soon after the murder occurred. They were seized following the arrest of John SHAUGHNESSY's sister-in-law Marion O'SHAUGHNESSY, for an assault on her husband. Suffice to say these exhibits TD/2, TD/3 and TD/4 mentioned in Mr CROMPTON's statement dated 12.6.91 have in our opinion no relevance to this case, and have since been restored to their owner.

237. (J) VERIFICATION OF JEANETTE TAPP'S EVIDENCE Following TAPP's disclosure that she was not present at the Churchill Clinic on 3.6.91 re: alibi, enquiries have been made to verify her story. TAPP's mother Mrs Jeanette Ellen TAPP and her sister Marianne TAPP, have both been interviewed and statements obtained (attached). Both women confirm J.J. TAPP's movements on 3.6.91.

Another member of TAPP's family has also made a statement but refuses to attend Court. Other enquiries were made with neighbours of Mrs TAPP who could have further confirmed J.J. TAPP's presence at her mother's on 3.6.91. Unfortunately none were prepared to make statements to Police.

238. An additional statement is attached from Jeanette TAPP (dated 25.9.91) clarifying points raised from previous interviews and statements.

239. ACTION RE: TAPP's INVOLVEMENT Following advice from Counsel Mr Nigel SWEENEY, Jeanette TAPP was prosecuted for offence of 'Wasting Police Time'. She received an official caution from the Duty Inspector at Battersea Police Station on 18.9.91.

240. (K) OTHER STATEMENTS AND INFORMATION As the reader may recall from the first report, the victim's journey home from her place of employement, on 3.6.91 (day of murder) was by Public Transport (bus and train). As a result enquiries were made with London Transport Authorities and British Rail (Clapham Junction Branch) which resulted in details being obtained re: frequency of buses and trains in operation on 3.6.91. (Exhibits MRL/1 and RA/1 refer respectively).

241. Additionally Police Constable Jon BISHOP and Woman Detective Constable Coren SMITH have since retraced victim's route home from Barclays Bank, The Strand, on respective Monday nights by using the same Public Transport. Details of their journeys are contained in attached statements.

242. Furthermore, at the request of the Senior Investigation Officer, Detective Superintendent BURKE - Traffic Police retraced the route believed taken by defendant Michelle TAYLOR on the evening of the murder. They drove from the Churchill Clinic, Lambeth Road, to Vardens Road and vice versa, in an unmarked Police vehicle. Their statements contain details and duration of the journeys.

243. The bloodstained Jacket recovered from Michelle TAYLOR's vehicle (Exhibit AS/12) was submitted for forensic examination to Aldermaston on 25.9.91. It has now been confirmed that the victim's blood, Alison SHAUGHNESSY, is not present on this jacket. The scientist cannot determine if the blood present on the inner sleeves is that of either Michelle or Lisa TAYLOR's. (Statement now obtained and attached).

244. A Bail Application was made at the Central Criminal Court on Friday 13th September 1991 on behalf of both defendants. It resulted in Michelle TAYLOR being denied bail. However bail was granted to Lisa TAYLOR with set conditions, including a security of £10,000 being lodged with her Solicitor. The security having been lodged, Lisa TAYLOR was released from custody that same evening.

245. Detective Sergeant GLEESON and Detective Constable GALLAGHER travelled to Ireland on 16.9.91 where extensive enquiries were made regarding the defendant Michelle TAYLOR. Suffice to say, no solid information that could assist this enquiry was forthcoming. However statements were obtained from members of the victim's family and friends. The contents of which are contained in the outset of this report.

In addition some nine (9) sets of elimination fingerprints were obtained from the abovementioned parties who have visited Flat 3, 41 Vardens Road prior to the murder being committed. Unfortunately their fingerprints are not amongst the remaining outstanding marks recovered from the scene. It should also be noted that Mrs Mary BURKE (Statement Page No.507) confirms the presence of her deceased brother John O'SHAUGHNESSY at the flat prior to Alison and John SHAUGHNESSY taking up residence.

246. Police enquiries have also failed to trace the firm of builders/ decorators who were present at the scene in 1987, and other parties who are believed to have visited between 1987 and 1991.

247. Paragraph 153 in the initial report is Incorrect regarding the search of addresses being negative. It should be noted that during the search at Jeanette TAPP's flat on the morning of her arrest, a piece of paper containing a list of party guests was recovered by Detective Sergeant SAUNDERS (Exhibit RS/3). Recorded on this exhibit is Lisa and Philip. It is the opinion of the Investigating Team, that 'PHILIP' may well be the male referred to by Michelle and Lisa TAYLOR in their statements, where they spoke to a 'Rasta' Man in Bromley on the 3.6.91. Enquiries have failed to trace and identify this male.

248. CURRENT POSITION RE: OCCUPANTS OF 41 VARDENS ROAD Michael CASEY is still in Hospital following a stroke. He finds it extremely difficult to express himself verbally, and is constantly at a loss to recall words or objects. Mrs WRIGHT (Basement Flat) is very confused, frightened, and appears to suffer from loss of memory. It is now apparent that her sighting of Alison SHAUGHNESSY on 3.6.91 is incorrect. She finds it difficult because of a physical disability to leave her flat, and has stated she will not attend Court.

249. A revised 'timing of movements' (Anacapa) has now been prepared by the analyist. Copies attached for C.P.S. and Mr SWEENEY as requested.

250. Mentioned in Doctor UNSWORTH-WHITE's statement is the sighting of a male leaving 41/43 Vardens Road on 3.6.91 soon after two females emerged. It is the opinion of the Investigating Team that this male may well be the occupant of 43 Vardens Road -Mr Michael WARD. Therefore statements are attached from Mr WARD and his common-law wife Fay ECCLESTON, which may assist the reader.

251. A schedule of occupants residing both sides of 41 Vardens Road is currently being prepared, which may assist re: Para 250.

252. Police Constable Sheree BARNES was the first officer who recorded the first statement made by Michelle TAYLOR on the evening of 3.6.91, following the discovery of Alison's body. That statement is now produced as Exhibit SB/1. Notes were also made by the same officer during the conversation with Michelle TAYLOR and are produced as Exhibit SB/2.

253. During the course of this enquiry a considerable number of statements were taken, a large proportion of which have now no relevance to the case against Michelle or Lisa TAYLOR. Hence these statements have been separated into two bundles. The second bundle containing the non-relevant statements.

254. An additional short report is currently being prepared to conclude this enquiry. Suffice to say, nothing of any great relevance remains outstanding.

255. The transcripts of Jeanette TAPP's taped interviews are attached, exhibited by Detective Constable SMITH as CS/51 to CS/58.
