77. It appears that Michelle and Lisa followed Alison up
the stairs of her flat. Fingerprint evidence, which will
be discussed later, tends to suggest that Lisa was last
going up the stairs, because she closed the door of the
flat after they had all entered.
78. As Alison had just reached the top step of the flight
of stairs past the toilet, she was attacked from behind.
It appears the fatal wounds were immediately inflicted in
the throat and chest areas. Then as Alison's body fell to
the ground, she was repeatedly stabbed in the upper back
region and thighs.
79. The killing would only have taken a few minutes to complete
and both girls then quickly decamped from the scene.
EVENTS FOLLOWING THE MURDER
80. Dr. Micheal UNSWORTH-WHITE was cycling down Vardens
Road at about 5.45pm. when he saw two young females aged
between 18 and 25, running down the steps of 41 or 43 Vardens
Road. They were carrying a plastic carrier bag, containing
he thought, items of clothing. At the same time he saw a
male aged 45 - 50 years on the same steps, albeit the clothing
description is not right, it could have well been Michael
CASEY, the occupant of Flat 2, 41 Vardens Road, arriving
home after having had a few drinks that afternoon.
81. Since the murder Michael CASEY has suffered a stroke
and is seriously ill in hospital. His condition may improve,
but to date, he cannot recall anything happening when he
arrived home at the material time.
82. The girls ran up Vardens Road towards the Common and
Doctor UNSWORTH-WHITE's description of them both, matches
Lisa and Michelle.
83. At the time of the murder, John SHAUGHNESSY was as usual
buying flowers for the Clinic at the flower stall located
outside Waterloo Railway Station. The stall is owned and
run by Ronald (Buster) EDWARDS who recalls serving and speaking
to John at 5.45 pm. His assistant James William JUKES returned
to work at the stall at 5.45pm. and he remembers seeing
John there talking to Buster EDWARDS. Mr JUKES is certain
of the day because he and John SHAUGHNESSY were discussing
the forthcoming American Football Finals to be held at the
Wembley Stadium on the 9th June 1991.
84. At about 6.00pm. Valeria Carol McDONALD, a Reservations
Assistant, saw Michelle and Lisa in Michelle's car (White
Sierra Estate, index number RHX 958Y). She saw them drive
into the forecourt of the Clinic, when she waved to Michelle
who in turn waved back. She is confident of the time because
it was when she was due to go home.
85. Theresa O'SULLIVAN, Housekeeping Assistant, Brenda REGAN,
Catering Assistant and Celia SINGH, Housekeeping Assistant,
were all in the canteen at the Clinic between 6.00pm. and
6.30pm. when they saw John SHAUGHNESSY at one of the tables
on his own.
86. Kim Tracy SMITH, Theatre Nurse, also saw John alone
in the Clinic between 6.00pm. and 6.30pm. She recalls seeing
him sometime later between 7.00pm. and 8.30pm. as working
on the plants, but she cannot recollect seeing Michelle
at all that day.
87. Sharon Eleanor WARE, Housekeeping Assistant, believes
she saw both John and Michelle arranging flowers at the
'back table' at about 6.00pm., 7.45pm. and finally at 8.15pm.
She is certain of the 8.15pm. time because it was the exact
moment Brenda REGAN went home, and she confirms that sighting.
88. Lyn Patricia AUSTIN, a Receptionist, saw John and Michelle
in the Clinic Canteen talking to Beverley Theresa JENNER
between 6.30pm. and 7.00pm. It is interesting to note that
Beverley JENNER recalls that incident and being in the canteen,
but she is adamant that it happened at 5.45pm. and not later.
However, with all the evidence of sightings, her timing
is clearly wrong.
89. Leslie HOWES, a Porter, spoke to Michelle between 6.30pm.
and 7.00pm. when he saw both John and her working on the
flowers at the 'Back table'.
90. Fiona MORRISON a Physiotherapist, spoke very briefly
to John on the front drive at about 6.45pm., but she does
not recall seeing Michelle at all that day.
91. Swee Pol TAN, Staff Nurse and Sheelagh McCORRY, the
Hospital Matron, attended the pharmacy between 7.15pm. and
7.30pm. and recall seeing both John and Michelle working
on the flowers. They were still there when they left twenty
minutes later.
92. Jeanette Jackqueline TAPP (JJ) , a Housekeeping Assistant
and very close friend of Michelle and Lisa, returned home
to the Clinic at about 7.15pm. to 7.20pm. as she had just
left her mother's address, and after a 15 minutes walk arrived
at 60 Lambeth Road to find Lisa waving to her from her balcony
of Room 4 on the first floor. Lisa then met her at the front
door of the house. She told Jeanette TAPP that both she
and Michelle had been at the Clinic waiting for her since
5.00pm. After Jeanette had unpacked her shopping and the
two girls had had a brief chat, they went to see Michelle
in the Clinic before popping out to the shops to buy something
to eat and drink.
93. Linda Ann HANNES, a receptionist, saw Lisa in the lobby
area walking in the direction of the Pharmacy Department.
A few minutes later she reappeared with John and Michelle
when all three of them walked out of the front of the hospital.
Linda HANNES also recalls seeing John and Michelle earlier
at various times, not always together but when she did,
they were arranging flowers.
94. At about 8.00pm Jeanette TAPP in company with Lisa arrived
back in her room when Michelle appeared. She reiterated
Lisa's earlier statement that the two sisters had been at
the accommodation waiting for her from about 5.00pm. Michelle
had a drink of water, smoked a cigarette and then stated
she was about to take John home.
95. John and Michelle left the Churchill Clinic at about
8.15pm. in Michelle's car. They travelled along the normal
route arriving in Vardens Road at about 8.30 pm. As there
were no parking spaces in Vardens Road, Michelle parked
her car around the corner in Strathblane Road. They walked
back towards the flat and when John opened the communal
door he expressed surprise that the mortice, double lock,
was not in place.
96. Michelle followed John into the premises and when he
arrived on the top of the first flight of stairs, he saw
Alison's body lying just above. Michelle put her hand under
Alison's head and tried to pick her up. She felt for a pulse
and then immediately started screaming. John ran down the
stairs and knocked on Michael CASEY's flat door.
97. Both men returned to where Alison's body layed and as
she was obviously dead, they both went back to CASEY'S flat
and telephoned for the Police.
98. Michelle remembered that she had seen a Police Officer,
in uniform in the street at the time they arrived at the
flat; so she ran into the street looking for him. As he
was not there, she ran up the road, passed a telephone kiosk
and ran into the Roundhouse Public House at the end of Vardens
Road.
99. Peta Nicole WOLFE, a barmaid at the public house, telephoned
for the Police after Michelle had entered the premises and
screamed for help.
100. Roger NICHOLS a Garage Proprietor, William LANGBRIDGE
a building contractor, and lan FINLAY an Architect, together
with an unknown female, took Michelle back to the murder
scene where they met John outside.
101. They all entered the flat and as soon as the three
men from the public house realised the situation, they returned
to the street where they were met by a British Transport
Police Officer, Alex HARVEY who had been serving a Summons
in the street.
102. John and Michelle remained with Alison. Michelle pulled
her dress down over her pants, moved and stroked her hair.
She then went to the bathroom and washed her hands because
she had Alison's blood on them. When she returned she opened
one of the windows.
THE MURDER SCENE
103. Police Constables 858'WA' Lealie MACDONALD and 823'WA'
Grainne DWYER arrived at the venue at about 8.45pm. where
they quickly spoke to the men outside the premises before
they entered, and found John and Michelle on the stairs.
After a brief conversation with them, they all left the
premises and congregated in Michael CASEY's flat - No.2
104. Detective Sergeant Roy SAUNDERS arrived at the scene
at 8.50pm. He entered the flat and saw the apparent lifeless
body of Alison SHAUGHNESSY before he returned to the entrance
hall to meet the ambulance crew.
105. Paul ANDREWS ambulance man, and William MANDALL ambulance
driver, attended 41 Vardens Road at 8.54pm. DS SAUNDERS
and Paul ANDREWS then entered Flat 3 where Mr ANDREWS confirmed
there were no vital signs of life in Alison's body.
106. From Michael CASEY's flat Michelle telephoned her mother
and informed her of Alison's murder. Mrs Ann TAYLOR in turn
relayed the news to Lisa, who was still with Jeanette TAPP
in her room at 60 Lambeth Road. Shortly after that conversation
Lisa received a telephone call from Michelle who was still
in Mr CASEY's flat. Finally Jeanette TAPP arranged for Lisa
to be taken home to her parents house by a mini cab.
107. John SHAUGHNESSY, Michelle TAYLOR and Michael CASEY
were then all taken by police transport to Battersea Police
Station where they made witness statements.
108. Josephine Burnell HOWITT, Forensic Medical Examiner
arrived at 41 Vardens Road, SW11 at 9.31pm. DS SAUNDERS
showed her Alison's body and she pronounced life extinct
at 9.36pm.
109. Dr Rufus CROMPTON, Pathologist attended the murder
scene and between 9.50pm. and 9.59pm. he viewed the body
in the presence of Detective Superintendent Thomas GLENDINNING,
the initial Senior Investigating Officer.
110. Morgan HELPS, Senior Photographer, took photographs
of the scene between 9.40pm. on the 3rd June 1991 and 12.20am.
on 4th June 1991. He produces the album of photographs as
Exhibit MH/1.
111. Detective Constable Coren SMITH, was appointed Exhibits
Officer at the scene and she will produce a full list of
items collected during the investigation.
112. Police Constable 858'WA' Lesley MacDONALD was present
at the flat when the undertakers removed Alison's body.
She then accompanied them to St George's Hospital Mortuary.
113. The scene was guarded by uniformed officers during
the night and the next day it was examined for fingerprints
by Eric MILNE, Senior Identification Officer and Brian RICE
Higher Identification Officer from the Forensic Science
Support Unit based at Barnes Police Building.
114. Doctor Christopher PRICE, Senior Scientific Officer
from the Serious Crimes Unit at the Metropolitan Police
Laboratory, Lambeth lead a team which fully examined the
scene forensically. However no evidence was forthcoming
from that examination, and accordingly no statement has
been made.
115. Dr Rufus CROMPTON, Pathologist, performed a post mortem
examination on Alison's body on Tuesday 4th June 1991. He
discovered she had been wounded and or stabbed some 54 times.
He gave the cause of death as haemorrhage due to multiple
stab wounds.
116. Morgan HELPS, Senior Photographer, took photographs
of the deceased at the post mortem. He produces his photograph
album as Exhibit MH/2
